Refraktiotesteillä, commonly known as refraction tests, are a fundamental part of eye examinations used to determine a person's refractive error. This error occurs when the eye cannot focus light properly onto the retina, leading to blurred vision. Refraction tests are crucial for diagnosing and correcting conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia.

The process typically involves a series of tests conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. One common method uses a phoropter, a device with a series of lenses that are systematically introduced in front of the patient's eyes. The patient is asked to compare the clarity of a vision chart when different lenses are in place. Another technique is autorefraction, which uses a machine to automatically estimate the refractive error. This is often a starting point, with manual testing following to refine the prescription.

Subjective refraction relies on the patient's responses to questions about which lens provides the clearest vision. Objective refraction, on the other hand, uses instruments like retinoscopes to measure the eye's refractive state without requiring patient feedback. Combining both subjective and objective methods generally leads to the most accurate prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Refraction tests are painless and relatively quick, making them an accessible tool for improving vision.
