Ravimpakendid are the packaging solutions used to contain, protect, inform about, and transport medicinal products from manufacture to patient. They encompass the materials and structures designed to safeguard active ingredients and facilitate safe use, storage, and handling.

Types and materials. Packaging is commonly divided into primary packaging (in direct contact with the product, such as blister packs, bottles, vials, ampoules, and sachets), secondary packaging (outer cartons or wrappers that group primary packages), and tertiary packaging (transport packaging like pallets and wrap). Materials used include plastics (such as PVC, PET, or multi-layer laminates), glass, metal, and paperboard. The choice depends on chemical compatibility with the medicine, barrier properties against moisture and oxygen, protection from light, stability needs, and cost.

Functions and design considerations. Effective ravimpakendid maintain drug stability and safety throughout shelf life, provide accurate dosing information, and support tamper evidence and child resistance where required. They also enable clear labeling with the product name, active ingredients, strength, storage conditions, expiration date, lot or serial numbers, and manufacturer details. Traceability features such as barcodes or QR codes aid distribution and pharmacovigilance.

Regulatory context. Packaging must conform to applicable national and international regulations for pharmaceuticals, including requirements for labeling, safety features, and quality assurance. In sterile or high-risk products, standards such as ISO 11607 offer guidance on sterile barrier systems. Regulatory regimes vary by jurisdiction, but common objectives include preserving product integrity, patient safety, and accurate information.

Environmental aspects. Ravimpakendid are increasingly evaluated for recyclability and sustainability, with emphasis on reducing material use, selecting recyclable materials, and designing for proper disposal within local waste systems.
