Ravidassia

Ravidassia is a religious tradition centered around the teachings of Ravidas, a 15th-century mystic poet and social reformer from the Indian subcontinent. Born in the late 14th century in the village of Seer Purana Qila (now in Uttar Pradesh, India), Ravidas is revered as a saint and philosopher by followers of Ravidassia, who primarily hail from the Dalit community, though the tradition attracts adherents from diverse backgrounds.

Ravidas is best known for his devotional poetry, which emphasizes equality, love for God, and social justice. His works, often composed in the Braj Bhasha dialect, critique caste discrimination and advocate for the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their social status. Key themes in his teachings include the oneness of God, the rejection of superstition, and the importance of selfless service. His hymns, such as *Sachcha Raag* and *Bhagti Raag*, remain central to Ravidassia worship.

Ravidassia is not a single organized religion but rather a spiritual movement that draws from elements of Hinduism, Sikhism, and other traditions. Followers, known as Ravidassis, often participate in communal gatherings called *kirtans*, where hymns are sung in praise of Ravidas. Temples dedicated to him, particularly the *Ravidass Ji Janam Asthan* in Seer Purana Qila, serve as important pilgrimage sites. The tradition also observes festivals such as *Guru Purnima* and *Basant Panchami* to honor Ravidas’ legacy.

Ravidassia promotes a philosophy of universal love and equality, encouraging followers to live virtuously through honesty, compassion, and devotion. While it does not prescribe strict rituals, it emphasizes personal spiritual growth and social harmony. The movement has gained prominence in modern times as a voice for marginalized communities, advocating for education, gender equality, and interfaith understanding.
