Ravidass

Ravidass, also known as Sant Ravidas, was a medieval Indian mystic poet and saint. He lived in the 15th century and is considered one of the most important figures in the Bhakti movement. Ravidass was born in a village near Varanasi and belonged to the Chamar caste, traditionally associated with leatherwork. Despite his humble origins, he gained widespread recognition for his spiritual teachings and devotional poetry.

His teachings emphasized the equality of all humans, regardless of caste or social status. Ravidass preached devotion to a formless God and advocated for a life of honesty, hard work, and compassion. He believed that true devotion came from within and was not dependent on rituals or outward appearances. His hymns and verses, often written in a simple and accessible language, addressed themes of love, devotion, social justice, and the search for truth.

Ravidass's philosophy and teachings resonated deeply with a wide range of people, including those from marginalized communities. He is revered as a guru by the Ravidassia community, a religious group that follows his teachings. His legacy continues to inspire millions through his enduring messages of equality, devotion, and social reform. His writings are primarily found in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and in other devotional texts.
