Ratschenschlüssels

A Ratschenschlüssel, often referred to as a ratcheting wrench or socket wrench in English, is a hand tool used for tightening and loosening fasteners. Its defining feature is the ratcheting mechanism integrated into the handle or head, which allows the user to turn the fastener continuously in one direction without having to reposition the wrench after each turn. This significantly speeds up the fastening process and makes it more convenient, especially in confined spaces where full rotation of the arm is difficult.

The mechanism typically consists of a gear and a pawl. When the wrench is turned in the tightening direction, the pawl engages with the teeth of the gear, causing the head to turn the fastener. When turned in the loosening direction, the pawl disengages, allowing the head to move freely without turning the fastener. Many ratschenschlüssel have a switch or lever to reverse the direction of the ratcheting action.

Ratschenschlüssel are commonly used with a set of interchangeable sockets, which come in various sizes and drive types to fit different fasteners like nuts and bolts. The sockets attach to the wrench's drive head, which is usually square.
