Raster basemaps are commonly used in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and cartography to provide a visual foundation for spatial analysis and mapping applications.

Raster basemaps are typically derived from satellite imagery, aerial photographs, or scanned maps. These images are stored in formats such as GeoTIFF, JPEG, or PNG, with additional metadata embedded to define geographic coordinates, projection, and spatial resolution. This allows the raster data to be accurately aligned with other geographic datasets.

Common sources of raster basemaps include satellite platforms like Landsat, Sentinel, or commercial providers such as Maxar Technologies (formerly DigitalGlobe) and Planet Labs. Aerial photography, often captured by drones or aircraft, is another frequent source, particularly for high-resolution urban or localized mapping needs. Additionally, historical maps or scanned paper maps can be digitized into raster format for preservation and analysis.

Raster basemaps are widely used in various applications, including urban planning, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and navigation. Their pixel-based nature allows for detailed visual representation of terrain, vegetation, water bodies, and infrastructure. However, raster data can be less efficient for editing and analyzing specific features compared to vector data, which is better suited for precise geometric operations.

The choice between raster and vector basemaps depends on the specific requirements of a project, such as the need for high-resolution imagery, ease of editing, or compatibility with existing GIS tools. Many modern GIS platforms support both formats, enabling users to integrate raster basemaps with vector layers for comprehensive spatial analysis.
