Rasitusvaiheet

Rasitusvaiheet, often translated as stress phases or phases of strain, is a concept in materials science and engineering used to describe the different stages a material undergoes when subjected to increasing levels of stress. This concept is particularly relevant when analyzing the behavior of materials under tensile or compressive loads, leading up to and including fracture.

The first phase is typically elastic deformation. In this stage, the material deforms reversibly. When the applied stress is removed, the material returns to its original shape. The relationship between stress and strain is linear, following Hooke's Law.

Following elastic deformation is the plastic deformation phase. Here, the deformation is permanent. If the stress is removed, the material does not fully recover its original shape. This occurs when the applied stress exceeds the material's yield strength. Within plastic deformation, there can be further stages. Strain hardening, for instance, describes the phenomenon where a material becomes stronger and harder as it is plastically deformed.

The final stage is often referred to as necking or localized deformation. In ductile materials, after reaching a peak stress, the material begins to deform non-uniformly, with a significant reduction in cross-sectional area occurring in a localized region. This leads to the eventual fracture of the material. Brittle materials, on the other hand, typically fracture with little or no prior plastic deformation, often failing during the elastic or early plastic stages.
