Rapautumisprosesseita, commonly referred to as weathering, describes the breakdown of rocks and minerals at or near the Earth's surface. This process is fundamental to the rock cycle and plays a crucial role in shaping landscapes. Weathering can be broadly categorized into physical (mechanical) and chemical weathering.

Physical weathering involves the disintegration of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Examples include frost wedging, where water seeps into cracks, freezes, expands, and widens the cracks; thermal expansion, caused by temperature fluctuations that stress and fracture rocks; and abrasion, the grinding down of rocks by friction with other rocks or sediment. Plant roots and animal activity can also contribute to physical weathering by physically breaking apart rocks.

Chemical weathering involves the decomposition of rocks through chemical reactions. This can occur through processes like dissolution, where minerals dissolve in water, such as halite dissolving in water. Oxidation, common in iron-bearing minerals, leads to the formation of rust. Hydrolysis involves the reaction of water with minerals, breaking them down into new compounds, like the weathering of feldspar into clay minerals. Carbonation, where carbonic acid (formed from carbon dioxide and water) reacts with rocks like limestone, is another significant chemical weathering process.

The rate and type of weathering are influenced by various factors, including climate (temperature and precipitation), rock type, and the presence of water and biological activity. Weathering is a slow but persistent process that ultimately breaks down the largest rock formations into the sediment that forms soils and is transported by erosion.
