Ramping

Ramping refers to the process of gradually increasing (or decreasing) a quantity over time toward a target value. The approach is used to smooth transitions, reduce transient effects, and manage resources, risk, or costs. Ramping can involve linear increases, curves, or discrete steps, depending on the application and the precision required.

In electronics and engineering, voltage or current ramping describes slowly changing a supply to avoid inrush currents, protect components, and maintain system stability. Ramp generators or slew-rate limits implement controlled ramps. In control systems, ramping helps compensate for actuator dynamics and prevent overshoot or instability.

In business, operations, and project planning, ramping often refers to gradually increasing production, staffing, or capacity, known as ramp-up.
