Rakennetyöt, eller rakennushyö, refer to the processes involved in constructing, renovating or demolishing buildings and other structures. They encompass a broad range of trades and activities, including site preparation, foundations, structural assembly, enclosure and roofing, building services (plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning), interior finishing, and exterior cladding. Construction work can involve new buildings, extensions, renovations, refurbishments, and civil engineering projects such as bridges or retaining walls.

Projects typically proceed through planning and design, permitting, procurement, execution, and commissioning. In the planning stage, architects and engineers prepare drawings and calculations; a building permit from local authorities is usually required. The execution phase includes preparing the site, excavations, laying foundations, erecting the structure, installing insulation and moisture barriers, installing windows and doors, and installing mechanical and electrical systems, followed by interior finishes. Quality control, safety, and adherence to codes are ongoing throughout.

Regulation and safety: Construction work is governed by building laws, zoning regulations, and occupational safety rules. In Finland, this includes the Building Code (RakMK) and the permitting process (rakennuslupa), as well as Työturvallisuus acts and regulations covering on-site safety. Responsibilities are shared among the main contractor, subcontractors, designers, and project managers, with inspections by authorities to verify compliance.

Economics and trends: Costs, scheduling, and contracts shape project delivery, with common approaches such as design-bid-build and design-build. Modern rakennettyöt emphasize energy efficiency, sustainable materials, prefabrication, and digital tools such as BIM and construction management software.
