Raamidest

Raamidest is a term used in architectural and structural engineering to describe the skeletal frame of a building. The frame comprises vertical elements (columns) and horizontal elements (beams) that transfer gravity loads and lateral forces to the foundation. In practice, raamidest define the primary load-bearing system, with non-structural walls and facades acting as infill rather than primary support. The concept covers a range of materials and configurations, including timber, steel, and reinforced concrete frames.

Common frame systems include timber frames, steel frames, and reinforced concrete frames. Within steel frames, moment-resisting frames rely on rigid connections to resist bending moments, while braced frames use diagonal members to resist lateral forces. Reinforced concrete frames can be bare frames or combined with shear walls to enhance stiffness and strength. The choice of system influences constructibility, speed, fire performance, and long-term maintenance, as well as how the building responds to wind and seismic events.

Design and planning considerations for raamidest include the building’s height, geometry, climate, and local seismic requirements. Detailed connection design, coordination with cladding and services, and considerations for durability and fire safety are essential. Economic factors, such as material costs, labor availability, and erection methods, also play a significant role.

Historically, frame-based construction advanced with industrialization, enabling taller and more flexible buildings than traditional load-bearing walls allowed.
