RAMmoduuleihin, often referred to as RAM sticks or memory modules, are standardized electronic devices that allow a computer to access its main memory. These modules contain integrated circuits that store data and instructions for the central processing unit (CPU) to use. The speed and capacity of RAM modules significantly impact a computer's performance, particularly in tasks that require handling large amounts of data simultaneously.

Modern computers typically use Dual In-line Memory Modules (DIMMs) or smaller SO-DIMMs for laptops and some compact systems. These modules are designed to be easily installed or replaced, allowing users to upgrade their system's memory. Different types of RAM, such as DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5, have varying speeds, power consumption, and compatibility with motherboards. The motherboard's chipset and CPU determine which type of RAM modules can be used.

When a computer needs to access information, it first looks in the CPU's cache. If the data is not found there, it is retrieved from the RAM modules. This process is much faster than accessing data from slower storage devices like hard drives or solid-state drives. Therefore, having sufficient and fast RAM is crucial for smooth multitasking and overall system responsiveness. The amount of RAM needed depends on the user's typical workload, with gaming, video editing, and running virtual machines generally requiring more memory.
