Pöytäasettelut

Pöytäasettelut refer to the arrangement of tableware, glassware, and other items on a dining table for a meal. These arrangements can range from simple to highly formal, depending on the occasion and the desired dining experience. A basic place setting typically includes a dinner plate, fork to the left, knife and spoon to the right, and a water glass above the knife. More elaborate settings introduce additional silverware for different courses, multiple glasses for various beverages, and decorative elements like placemats, napkins, and centerpieces.

The purpose of a pöytäasettelu is not only aesthetic but also functional, guiding diners on which utensils to use and in what order. In formal settings, the principle of "outside-in" is often followed, meaning utensils are used from the outermost to the innermost for each course. Napkins are usually placed to the left of the forks or on top of the plate. The placement of glasses is generally above the knife, with water glasses closest to the diner and wine glasses to their right.

Different cultures and regions may have variations in their traditional pöytäasettelut. For instance, some Asian table settings might include chopsticks and a rice bowl.
