Placemat refers to a flat mat placed in front of each diner at a table, intended to protect the table surface from heat, moisture, and scratches while helping define the individual place setting. Placemats also contribute to the dining room’s style and can be used to accent a theme or color scheme.

Materials and sizes vary widely. Common options include woven fabrics such as cotton, linen, and polyester; vinyl or coated fabrics; and natural materials such as cork, bamboo, or rattan. Paper placemats are inexpensive and typically disposable. Shapes include rectangular and square, as well as round or oval options. Design and usage. Placemats come in a range of designs, from solid colors to patterns, textures, or embroidery. Some are reversible, offering two looks in one. In formal or festive settings, placemats may be paired with charger plates to create a layered arrangement. While they provide some heat protection, placemats are not a substitute for a trivet or hot pad for very hot dishes.
