Pöytäasettelu refers to the arrangement of dishes, cutlery, glassware, and other items on a dining table before a meal. This arrangement is a fundamental aspect of table setting, aiming to provide guests with all necessary items for their meal in a visually appealing and functional manner. Basic table settings typically include a dinner plate, a fork placed to the left of the plate, and a knife and spoon to the right. Glassware for water or other beverages is usually positioned above and to the right of the plate. Napkins can be folded and placed on the plate, to the left of the forks, or in a napkin ring.

More formal settings will incorporate additional cutlery for different courses, such as salad forks, soup spoons, and dessert utensils, which are placed in order of use.
