The term originates from the Albanian word *për* (meaning "through" or "among") and *është* (meaning "to be"), implying a communal act of giving and receiving. Përësitim is commonly observed during holidays such as *Kombërdhënë* (National Day), *Dita e Verës* (Summer Day), or religious festivals like *Kreshnikja* (for boys) and *Ndërmarrja* (for girls).
