Pääomavirrat, or capital flows, refer to the movement of money across international borders for investment purposes. These flows can take various forms, including foreign direct investment (FDI), portfolio investment, and other investments such as loans and trade credits. FDI involves a direct ownership stake in a foreign enterprise, typically with the intention of managing or influencing its operations. Portfolio investment, on the other hand, encompasses the purchase of foreign financial assets like stocks and bonds without direct control over the issuing entity. Other investments are more diverse and include bank deposits, loans, and other financial instruments.

Capital flows are driven by a multitude of factors, including differences in interest rates, economic growth prospects, political stability, and exchange rate expectations. For recipient countries, capital inflows can be beneficial, providing much-needed funding for development, infrastructure projects, and job creation. They can also lead to technology transfer and improved management practices. However, volatile capital flows can also pose risks. Large and sudden inflows can lead to currency appreciation, making exports less competitive and potentially fueling asset bubbles. Conversely, rapid outflows, often referred to as capital flight, can trigger financial crises, currency depreciation, and economic instability.

Governments and central banks often implement policies to manage capital flows, aiming to harness their benefits while mitigating their risks. These policies can include capital controls, reserve requirements, and adjustments to monetary policy. The study and management of capital flows are crucial for global economic stability and the development of individual economies.
