Pääomanliikkeiden, which translates to "capital movements" in English, refers to the flow of capital across national borders. This encompasses various transactions, including investments, loans, and other financial transfers. Capital movements can be broadly categorized into two types: foreign direct investment (FDI) and portfolio investment. FDI involves a direct investment in a foreign enterprise with the intention of exercising control, while portfolio investment includes the purchase of foreign stocks, bonds, and other financial assets without the aim of gaining control.

The reasons for capital movements are diverse. Countries may engage in capital outflows to seek higher returns abroad, diversify their investment portfolios, or facilitate international trade and investment. Conversely, capital inflows can provide developing countries with much-needed funding for economic growth, infrastructure development, and job creation. However, large and volatile capital movements can also pose risks. Sudden outflows, often termed capital flight, can destabilize a country's economy, leading to currency depreciation, inflation, and financial crises. Conversely, excessive inflows can cause currency appreciation, overheating of the economy, and asset bubbles.

International organizations and national governments monitor and regulate capital movements to manage their economic impacts. Policies related to capital controls, exchange rate management, and financial sector regulation are employed to mitigate risks and harness the benefits of international capital flows. The liberalization of capital movements has been a prominent trend in recent decades, driven by globalization and the desire to promote economic efficiency, but concerns about financial stability persist.
