Päivitystaajuus, often translated as refresh rate, refers to the number of times a display screen refreshes its image per second. It is measured in Hertz (Hz). A higher refresh rate means the screen updates the image more frequently, resulting in smoother motion and a reduction in perceived motion blur. For example, a 60Hz display refreshes its image 60 times every second, while a 120Hz display refreshes 120 times per second.

The refresh rate is a crucial factor for several applications. In gaming, a higher refresh rate allows for a more responsive and immersive experience, as it can display more frames per second rendered by the graphics card. This leads to less input lag and clearer visuals during fast-paced action. Similarly, in video playback and general computer use, a higher refresh rate can make scrolling and animations appear more fluid and natural, reducing eye strain.

Different types of displays have varying typical refresh rates. Older monitors often had refresh rates of 60Hz. However, modern monitors, especially those targeted at gamers, commonly offer 120Hz, 144Hz, or even higher refresh rates. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, also increasingly feature higher refresh rates, with many now offering 90Hz or 120Hz options to improve user experience.

It's important to distinguish refresh rate from frame rate. While refresh rate is a property of the display, frame rate is the number of frames a source, like a computer or gaming console, can produce per second. For the full benefit of a high refresh rate display, the source must be capable of outputting a frame rate that matches or exceeds it.
