These modes determine how numbers are rounded when they cannot be represented exactly in binary floating-point formats, such as IEEE 754. Rounding is essential because finite precision arithmetic can introduce errors, and consistent rounding rules help maintain predictable behavior in calculations.

The most common rounding modes include:

- **Round to Nearest (Even):** The result is rounded to the nearest representable value, with ties (numbers exactly halfway between two representable values) rounded to the nearest even number. This mode minimizes cumulative rounding errors over many operations.

- **Round Toward Zero (Truncate):** The result is simply truncated, discarding any fractional part without rounding up or down. This is often used in financial calculations where overestimation is undesirable.

- **Round Away from Zero (Ceiling/Floor):** The result is rounded away from zero, effectively rounding up positive numbers and down negative numbers. This is useful for ensuring results meet minimum requirements.

- **Round Toward Positive Infinity (Ceiling):** The result is always rounded up, regardless of the sign. This is commonly used in financial contexts to avoid underestimation.

- **Round Toward Negative Infinity (Floor):** The result is always rounded down, which is useful for ensuring results meet maximum constraints.
