Puurankenteet

Puurankenteet is a Finnish term describing the internal framework of a wooden construction, commonly rendered in English as wooden skeletons or timber frames. It refers to the network of vertical and horizontal members—such as studs, joists, beams, and plates—that transfers loads from the exterior structure to the foundation, while often remaining hidden behind finishes in modern buildings or exposed in traditional constructions.

Etymology and usage are straightforward: the word combines elements that denote wood and skeleton, and it is used in architectural, carpentry, and conservation contexts to describe the structural core of wooden structures. In practice, puurankenteet define the load-bearing envelope of timber-framed or log buildings, and in shipbuilding they form the hull’s frame. In furniture making, an internal frame can also be described as part of the puurankenteet. In restoration, identifying the puurankenteet helps assess condition, plan repairs, and ensure structural safety.

Construction details vary across traditions. Traditional timber framing often uses mortise-and-tenon connections and large wooden members, while contemporary systems may employ nails, screws, metal plates, or glue-laminated elements. Modern timber construction frequently emphasizes precise fabrication and moisture management to maintain the integrity of the wooden skeleton.

Preservation challenges include moisture variation, rot, and insect damage. Effective maintenance focuses on ventilation, humidity control, regular inspections, and appropriate treatments to protect the puurankenteet over time.
