Puupaneel

PUUPaneel is a term used in the construction industry to describe a class of polyurethane-based sandwich panels. These panels are designed to provide a combination of thermal insulation, structural stiffness, and a finished surface, and they are commonly used for walls, roofs, facades, and interior partitions as well as for refrigerated and clean-room environments. PUUPaneels are produced in various thicknesses, widths, and facings to suit different performance requirements.

Composition and manufacture

A typical PUUPaneel has a core of rigid polyurethane foam, which may be PUR or PIR, bonded between lightweight outer skins. The facing materials can include metal sheets (such as steel or aluminum), reinforced polymers, or decorative laminates. The core and skins are assembled in a continuous lamination process, and optional finishes or coatings may be applied to the outer surface. The choice of core density, skin material, and adhesive system determines insulation value, rigidity, fire performance, and durability.

Properties

PUUPaneels are valued for high thermal resistance relative to their thickness, contributing to energy-efficient envelopes. They are generally lightweight, have good compressive strength when paired with appropriate skins, and exhibit low water absorption for closed-cell formulations. Fire performance varies with foam grade and facer material, so panels are selected to meet regional fire-safety requirements. Long-term durability depends on exposure conditions and the integrity of seals and joints.

Applications

Used in both new construction and retrofit projects, PUUPaneels appear in external walls, roof assemblies, interior partitions, cold-storage facilities, and modular or curved façades. They enable rapid installation, airtight assemblies, and flexible design options, often contributing to reduced on-site labor and material waste.

Standards and environment

PUUPaneels are manufactured to regional building regulations and fire-safety standards. End-of-life options include recycling of metal skins and, where feasible, reclamation of foam components, with environmental assessments guiding selection of materials and adhesives.
