PuneMumbai

PuneMumbai is a term used to describe the economic and urban corridor that links the city of Pune with Mumbai in Maharashtra, India. It denotes the growing interconnection and shared development potential of the Pune Metropolitan Region and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region along the western coast of the state.

Geography and demography: The corridor lies along the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau, with Pune inland and Mumbai on the coast. Together they form one of India's most densely built urban belts, home to a large, highly skilled workforce and diverse communities.

Economy and development: The region hosts finance, IT, manufacturing, media, and services sectors concentrated in Mumbai, while Pune acts as a hub for information technology, engineering, education, and research. The Pune–Mumbai Industrial Corridor is a government-planned initiative to create an integrated industrial and logistics belt along the route, leveraging existing and planned infrastructure to promote manufacturing and trade.

Transportation and infrastructure: Connectivity is anchored by the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the busy Mumbai–Pune rail link, and both cities' airports (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and Pune's Lohegaon Airport). Metro systems in Mumbai and Pune supplement road transport and freight corridors. Ongoing projects aim to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce travel times.

Governance and planning: Planning authorities such as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) coordinate land use, housing, and infrastructure within their areas. Environmental sustainability, water supply, and urban housing remain challenges as the PuneMumbai corridor grows.
