PumpPuls

PumpPuls is a family of programmable pulsatile pumping systems designed for precise control of fluid flow in laboratory and industrial settings. The system generates periodic pulses by actuating a flexible chamber within the pump head, producing a controllable beat that modulates flow to suit experimental needs.

Design and operation

PumpPuls devices are available in benchtop and integrated microfluidic formats. They typically use a small servo or stepper motor that drives a cam or piston to compress the pump chamber, creating a pulse train. Stroke volume and pulse frequency are adjustable, allowing flow rates from tightly controlled nanoliter-scale pulses to several tens of milliliters per minute depending on configuration. Materials commonly include medical-grade silicone, polycarbonate, and stainless steel for strength and chemical compatibility. The systems are designed for sterile workflows, with compatible tubing and easy connector interfaces. Control is achieved through a microcontroller-based electronics package with USB, Ethernet, or wireless options and software that provides scripting or an application programming interface for automation.

The PumpPuls line originated from PumpTech Corp in the early 2010s, with successive revisions introducing improved precision, software features, and compatibility with broader fluid-handling ecosystems. In practice, it is regarded for its controllability and integration potential, though users must manage shear effects in sensitive applications and perform routine calibration and maintenance.
