Puidutselluloos, also known as wood pulp, is a fibrous material derived from wood. It is primarily composed of cellulose, a complex carbohydrate that forms the structural component of plant cell walls. The process of obtaining wood pulp involves separating cellulose fibers from lignin, a complex polymer that binds wood fibers together, and other wood components.

The production of wood pulp typically begins with the harvesting of trees. These logs are then debarked and chipped into smaller pieces. These wood chips are then subjected to either mechanical or chemical pulping processes. Mechanical pulping grinds the wood chips, separating the fibers but retaining most of the lignin. This results in a weaker pulp that is often used for paper products that do not require high strength, such as newsprint. Chemical pulping, on the other hand, uses chemicals to dissolve the lignin, yielding purer cellulose fibers. This process results in a stronger, higher-quality pulp suitable for a wider range of applications.

The primary use of wood pulp is in the manufacturing of paper and cardboard. It serves as the fundamental raw material for most paper products, from writing paper and tissues to packaging materials. Beyond paper production, wood pulp also finds applications in the creation of textiles, such as rayon and viscose, which are regenerated cellulose fibers. It can also be used in the production of certain plastics, cellophane, and as a binder or filler in various industrial products. The environmental impact of wood pulp production is a significant consideration, with sustainable forestry practices and efficient pulping processes being crucial for minimizing ecological footprint.
