Instead, it generally refers to psoriasis that exhibits features considered typical or classic by older definitions, often emphasizing the silvery-white scales on erythematous plaques.

The term likely arose to distinguish certain psoriasis presentations from others that might have atypical appearances, such as pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis. Historically, before a more nuanced understanding of psoriasis subtypes emerged, "psoriatic" might have been used more broadly, or in some cases, specifically for the most common plaque form.
