It spans public health, safety, economic planning, criminology, and environmental protection and is often distinguished from treatment or mitigation after events occur.

In public health, Präventions includes vaccination, hygiene promotion, risk communication, and environmental modifications to reduce exposure. In safety and occupational health, it includes engineering controls, safety training, and protective equipment. In traffic safety, measures such as road design, speed management, seat belts, and enforcement help prevent crashes. In criminology, Präventions covers situational measures, community policing, and early intervention programs. In disaster risk reduction, it aims to reduce vulnerability and exposure to hazards.

Frameworks commonly distinguish levels of prevention: primary prevention aims to prevent the initial occurrence; secondary prevention seeks to identify and address problems early to stop progression; tertiary prevention reduces harm once a condition has developed. Decision-making relies on evidence, cost-effectiveness analyses, and monitoring outcomes using indicators like incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years.

Implementation emphasizes equity, culturally appropriate design, and stakeholder engagement. Challenges include resource constraints, competing interests, and privacy concerns. Effective Präventions typically require cross-sector collaboration, ongoing evaluation, and adaptation to local context.
