Prostatabetændelse

Prostatabetændelse, also known as prostatitis, is an inflammation of the prostate gland. This gland is part of the male reproductive system, located below the bladder. Prostatitis can affect men of all ages, but it is more common in men under 50.

There are several types of prostatitis. Acute bacterial prostatitis is a sudden, severe infection caused by bacteria. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, and pain in the groin, pelvic area, or genitals. Urinary symptoms like frequent urination, burning during urination, and difficulty urinating are also common. Chronic bacterial prostatitis is a recurring infection with less severe symptoms.

Nonbacterial prostatitis is the most common type and its cause is often unclear. It can be inflammatory, meaning there are signs of inflammation but no infection, or non-inflammatory, with no signs of inflammation or infection. Symptoms can include pelvic pain, discomfort in the perineum, pain during ejaculation, and urinary issues.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, including a digital rectal exam, urine tests, and sometimes blood tests. Treatment depends on the type of prostatitis. Bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics. For nonbacterial prostatitis, treatments may include pain relievers, alpha-blockers to relax bladder muscles, or lifestyle changes. In some cases, stress management or physical therapy may be recommended. While prostatitis can be uncomfortable and disruptive, it is usually treatable.
