In these models, Prophaseben designates a brief preparatory window during which early nuclear and chromosomal rearrangements occur before full chromosome condensation and spindle assembly proceed. The concept is not established in mainstream cell biology and is not described in standard textbooks.

Proposed features of Prophaseben include localized chromatin remodeling that primes regions for condensation, partial disassembly or reorganization of the nuclear envelope, and the recruitment of a subset of kinetochore and spindle-assembly factors. Advocates argue that separating these steps into a distinct subphase could help explain variations in mitotic timing or differences between cell types, though such subdivision is not supported by robust experimental evidence.

In practice, Prophaseben has appeared mainly in theoretical discussions, educational simulations, and occasionally in science fiction constructs. Critics note that standard observations of prophase already integrate the sequence of events without invoking an intermediate state, and that the term has little basis in peer-reviewed physiology.
