Propertieselasticity

Propertieselasticity refers to the elastic properties of materials, the characteristics that determine how a material deforms under mechanical load and recovers its original shape when the load is removed. In physics and engineering, elasticity is described by stress-strain relationships and is most commonly quantified by elastic moduli: Young's modulus (E), shear modulus (G), and bulk modulus (K). Poisson's ratio (ν) captures the ratio of lateral to axial strain. In isotropic, linear-elastic materials these parameters—E, G, K, ν, and density (ρ)—sufficiently describe the elastic response; for anisotropic materials the full stiffness tensor is needed.

Measurement and behavior: Elastic properties can depend on temperature, time, and loading rate. Many materials exhibit viscoelasticity, with time-dependent or frequency-dependent response. The relationships K = E/(3(1-2ν)) and G = E/(2(1+ ν)) link moduli in isotropic materials, while stiffness tensor components describe direction-dependent behavior in crystals.

Methods: Common tests include tensile and compression tests to obtain E and yield points, dynamic mechanical analysis to measure modulus over a range of frequencies, nanoindentation for small-scale stiffness, and ultrasound or resonant techniques to extract elastic constants.

Applications: Elastic properties influence design in construction, aerospace, automotive, electronics packaging, and biomedical devices, where stiffness, resilience, and vibration behavior are critical.
