Projektormapping

Projektormapping, also known as projection mapping, is a technique for turning irregularly shaped surfaces into display surfaces for video projection. By projecting images onto objects such as buildings, sculptures, or stage sets, the content is warped and masked so that it appears to be part of the surface. The effect relies on precise alignment between the projected image and the geometry of the target, which is achieved through calibration and, often, 3D modelling.

The typical workflow includes creating or importing a 3D model of the target surface, producing the visual content, and using mapping software to assign image regions to specific surface facets. Geometric corrections such as warping, keystone adjustments, and masking ensure the visuals fit the real-world shape. When multiple projectors are used, edge blending and color matching are necessary to create a seamless image across projections. The process may also involve synchronization with lighting, sound, or interactive sensors.

Common software tools used for projektormapping include dedicated mapping applications and media players that support warping, masking, and multi-projector setups. Hardware requirements include high-brightness projectors, appropriate lenses, and sometimes capture devices for live calibration. The workflow often benefits from pre-visualization in 3D and staged testing on-site.

Applications of projektormapping span artistic installations, live performances, architectural and urban displays, museums, theaters, and brand campaigns. It enables dynamic storytelling on complex surfaces and can be combined with interactivity, motion tracking, or LED displays to create immersive experiences. The technique has evolved with more accessible hardware and software, expanding participation from professional studios to independent artists.
