Its purpose is to inform audiences, provide context, and help readers navigate the program.

Typical contents include the official timetable with the order of performances, venues and times; a list of works, composers, authors, ensembles, soloists, conductors, and cast; synopses or program notes describing pieces or productions; and background information about the artists and creators. Many programmbücher also contain introductory essays, translation snippets, or historical and thematic context. Practical details such as venue accessibility, seating, intermission information, ticketing, prices, and a map may be included. Biographical notes, acknowledgments, and sponsor or advertiser pages are common, as are editorial messages from organizers.

Publication and formats:

Relation to terminology:

- In German-speaking contexts, programmbuches are related to, but distinct from, Programmhefte. While a Programmheft often refers to a season-wide program issued by a theater or opera house, a programmbuch is typically event- or festival-specific and may focus on a single program or a concise collection of performances.
