Probleemsgericht is a problem-centric approach used across professional fields to identify, analyze, and address concrete problems through targeted interventions. Originating in Dutch professional discourse, it emphasizes starting from a real problem experienced by users, clients, or communities, and framing it in observable terms rather than applying generic solutions. The aim is to produce practical improvements and to learn from the outcomes.

The approach typically follows an iterative cycle: identify and define the problem; analyze contributing factors and stakeholders; design interventions aimed at the root causes; implement solutions; monitor results; and adjust as needed. Key principles include collaboration with stakeholders, data-driven analysis, clarity of aims, and ongoing evaluation.

Probleemsgericht is used in social work, education, healthcare, and law enforcement. In social work and welfare, it guides case work by focusing on specific, measurable problems (for example housing instability or access to support services). In education, it relates to problem-based or case-based learning where real-world problems drive study. In policing and public safety, problem-oriented policing applies a similar logic to reduce crime and harm by addressing underlying local problems rather than merely responding to incidents.

Critics note that a strictly problem-centered approach can overlook systemic factors or produce narrow solutions if problems are poorly framed. Success depends on skilled facilitation, adequate data, and genuine collaboration among stakeholders.
