Prepresstyöstä, often translated as pre-press work or prepress production, refers to the essential processes that occur after the content creation stage and before the actual printing begins. This phase is critical for ensuring that a design is technically ready for mass production and that the final printed product meets the desired quality standards.

The scope of prepress work can be extensive, encompassing tasks such as page layout and design, typesetting, image manipulation and correction, color management, proofreading, and imposition. In digital workflows, prepress also involves file preparation, ensuring that the digital files are correctly formatted, have the appropriate resolution, and are free from errors that could cause problems during printing. This can include checking for overprint issues, trapping, and converting colors to the appropriate color space, such as CMYK for commercial printing.

A key function of prepress is the creation of proofs. These are preliminary versions of the printed material that allow clients and printers to review the content, layout, and colors before the final run. Proofs can range from simple digital PDFs to high-fidelity contract proofs that closely mimic the final printed output. This stage is crucial for catching mistakes, ensuring accuracy, and confirming client satisfaction, thereby minimizing costly errors during the actual printing process.
