Preflighting

Preflighting is a proactive quality assurance process conducted before a task begins, aimed at verifying that inputs, data, or equipment meet defined specifications and are free of issues that could cause problems later. The checks and tools vary by domain, but the goal is early problem detection and reduced rework.

In printing and publishing, preflighting assesses digital files for print readiness. Typical checks include embedded or outlined fonts, image resolution, color space and ICC profiles, bleeds, crop marks, page size, and proper handling of transparency. Automated preflight software produces reports that flag errors and suggest remedies like font embedding or image re-sourcing. A successful preflight is usually required before production proceeds.

In aviation, a preflight inspection is conducted by pilots and maintenance personnel before each flight to verify airworthiness. Exterior checks cover the airframe, controls, tires, and fluids; interior checks confirm equipment and documentation; and weight, balance, fuel, and flight plans are reviewed. Any discrepancies are resolved prior to departure. Skipping a required preflight can compromise safety and violate regulations.

In software and digital workflows, preflight checks validate builds, assets, and configurations before release. Checks may cover dependencies, security settings, accessibility, and metadata. Automated gates often block deployment until issues are resolved, helping ensure compliance with standards and reduce downstream failures.
