Prediccions

Prediccions are statements about future events or outcomes that are derived from patterns in data, models, or expert judgement. They aim to estimate likely results and often express uncertainty. The concept encompasses quantitative forecasts, such as a probability distribution over possible outcomes, and qualitative scenarios that describe plausible futures without precise probabilities.

Methods include statistical forecasting, mathematical modeling, and machine learning; Bayesian inference; time series analysis; regression; ensemble methods; and structured expert judgement. Data sources include historical records, experiments, surveys, and real-time sensor streams. Forecasts can be point estimates, intervals, or probabilistic assessments.

Applications and domains include weather, economics, epidemiology, demography, politics, and sports. It distinguishes between a forecast (prediction of observable quantities) and a projection (an assumptive scenario conditioned on certain trends).

Uncertainty and evaluation are central to prediccions: predictions are inherently uncertain, and accuracy is judged by verification against observed outcomes using metrics such as calibration, sharpness, RMSE, or Brier score. Limitations include data quality, non-stationarity, model misspecification, and overfitting. Ethical considerations cover transparency, reproducibility, and the responsible communication of uncertainty to avoid sensationalism or misinterpretation.

History shows a long development from early probabilistic reasoning to modern statistical and computational forecasting. The field integrates theory from statistics and probability with practical methods across disciplines, supporting informed decision-making in uncertain environments.
