Predeformation

Predeformation is the intentional plastic deformation imparted to a material before a subsequent manufacturing operation. It is used to modify the material's microstructure and mechanical response, often to improve formability, control texture, or tailor residual stresses.

Common methods include pre-bending, pre-straining through rolling, drawing, extrusion, and punching-induced work, or pre-forming steps before final shaping. The amount and path of deformation, temperature, and rate determine the resulting effects.

Effects include work hardening, increased yield strength, changes in ductility, development of crystallographic texture, and residual stress patterns. Predeformation can refine or tailor grain structure during later heat treatment; positive effects on deep-drawn formability can occur with appropriate pre-strain, while excessive predeformation may reduce ductility and increase springback.

Applications span sheet metal forming, tubes and wiredrawing, and polymer processing where chains are oriented by pre-stretching. In metals, an anneal after predeformation can permit recrystallization to restore ductility while preserving a tailored texture or residual-stress state.

Characterization uses mechanical testing, residual-stress measurements, and microstructural analysis (EBSD, XRD); numerical models of forming limit and constitutive behavior help predict outcomes of predeformation paths.
