Precisionmechanica is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the design, manufacture, assembly, and metrology of mechanical systems whose performance relies on extreme dimensional accuracy and repeatability. It encompasses concepts from precision engineering, tribology, materials science, and control theory, and seeks to minimize deviations due to thermal, vibrational, and wear effects. Target tolerances range from micrometers to nanometers depending on the application.

Key goals include achieving high stiffness, low thermal sensitivity, minimal backlash, and stable dynamic behavior. Kinematic design, preload strategies, and careful choice of bearings and guides reduce parasitic motion. Materials are selected for dimensional stability and low coefficient of thermal expansion; common choices include invar, zerodur, and advanced ceramics. Manufacturing employs ultra-precision turning, milling, grinding, and diamond turning, along with metrology-grade assembly in clean environments.

Metrology and calibration are central. Interferometry, laser autocollimation, CMM-based measurement, and traceable standards are used to verify form, position, and alignment. Design often anticipates and compensates for thermal drift, using active or passive temperature control and athermalization schemes.

Applications include optical assemblies, semiconductor equipment, high-precision stages, telescope mounts, metrology instruments, and laboratory automation. The field emphasizes repeatability under varying loads and long-term stability. Educational programs combine mechanical engineering with metrology and control theory, training engineers to model tolerances, plan manufacturing, and perform precise alignment.
