Praktik is a term used in several languages to denote the act of applying theoretical knowledge in real situations. The word originates from the Greek πρακτικός (praktikos), meaning “practical” or “pertaining to action,” and entered Latin as praktikus before spreading into various European languages.

In Indonesian and Malay, praktik refers both to the act of doing something and to a set of established procedures. The term is frequently paired with praktikum (dry or laboratory practice) and kepakaran (specialization) within educational discourse. For instance, a medical student’s praktikum involves hands‑on clinical work under supervision, whereas a lawyer’s praktik is the application of statutes and case law in court. In some contexts, praktik has acquired a professional sense, indicating a standard of conduct or a body of work that adheres to accepted norms.

The usage of praktik can vary in nuance. In informal speech it often simply means “to do something” as in “praktik apa‑apa” (trying something out). Because of this, practitioners in fields such as education, engineering, or psychotherapy emphasize the development of good praktik as essential for competence and credibility.
