They are compatible with most .177 and .22 caliber air rifles and pistols and are designed to deliver consistent, predictable results at typical practice ranges.

Composition and design vary by manufacturer, but most practicespellets are lead-based or lead-free alloys, with some offering copper or polymer coatings to reduce lead exposure and fouling. Common shapes include the diabolo (waisted) form, with domed heads being typical for general plinking and practice. Wadcutter or hollow-point options may be offered but are less common for routine training due to differing ballistic traits. Tolerances for practice pellets are generally broader than those of specialty or competition-grade pellets, reflecting a balance between cost and consistent performance.

Applications and practice use focus on sighting-in, basic marksmanship, and routine training drills. Because performance can vary more than with premium pellets, users may find small differences in point of impact between lots. For high-precision work or competition, shooters often switch to higher-grade pellets to minimize variability.
