Populatsioon

Populatsioon (Estonian for “population”) is a core concept in biology and ecology, referring to a group of individuals of the same species that occupy a defined area or habitat at a given time. A populatsioon is studied within the context of intraspecific processes such as reproduction, survival, and gene flow, and it is distinct from a community (multiple species) or an ecosystem (biotic and abiotic interactions).

Key attributes of a populatsioon include its size (N), density (N per unit area), geographic range, age structure, sex ratio, and genetic makeup. Populations fluctuate over time due to births, deaths, immigration, and emigration.
