Polüvinüülkloriidiks, commonly known as PVC, is a widely used synthetic plastic polymer. It is produced through the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). PVC is a versatile material that can be rigid or flexible, depending on the addition of plasticizers. Its properties make it suitable for a vast range of applications across various industries.

The production of PVC typically involves two main steps: the synthesis of VCM and its subsequent polymerization. VCM is usually produced from ethylene and chlorine. The polymerization process can be achieved through several methods, including suspension, emulsion, and bulk polymerization. The choice of method influences the physical properties of the resulting PVC resin.

Rigid PVC, also known as unplasticized PVC (uPVC), is strong, durable, and resistant to chemicals and weathering. It is commonly used in construction for applications such as window frames, pipes, siding, and roofing membranes. Its resistance to corrosion makes it an excellent alternative to metal in many plumbing and drainage systems.

Flexible PVC, on the other hand, is made by adding plasticizers to the PVC polymer. This makes the material softer, more pliable, and stretchable. Flexible PVC finds applications in products like electrical cable insulation, flooring, medical tubing, inflatable structures, and automotive interiors. The ability to tailor its flexibility through the use of different plasticizers contributes to its widespread use.

PVC is also known for its good electrical insulation properties and its relatively low cost of production, which further enhances its appeal for widespread adoption. Despite its utility, there are environmental considerations related to its production and disposal, particularly concerning the use of chlorine and potential releases of plasticizers.
