Polyaddiction

Polyaddiction, also known as multiple addiction or polysubstance use disorder, refers to the simultaneous or sequential use and dependence on two or more substances, such as drugs, alcohol, or even behaviors like gambling or internet use. This condition is characterized by a pattern of compulsive substance seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. Individuals suffering from polyaddiction may experience a complex interplay of withdrawal symptoms when one substance is reduced or removed, potentially leading to continued use of multiple substances to manage these effects.

The development of polyaddiction is often influenced by a combination of genetic predispositions, environmental factors, psychological issues, and social influences. Early exposure to substances, co-occurring mental health disorders like depression or anxiety, and a lack of social support are common contributing factors.
