Polttoainemäärää, or fuel gauge, is a device used in vehicles to indicate the amount of fuel remaining in the tank. It typically consists of a glass tube filled with a liquid, often colored, that rises or falls in response to the fuel level. The fuel gauge provides a visual representation of the fuel quantity, allowing drivers to monitor their fuel levels and plan refueling accordingly.

The fuel gauge operates by measuring the pressure of the fuel in the tank. As the fuel level decreases, the pressure in the tank drops, causing the liquid in the gauge to fall. Conversely, as the fuel level increases, the pressure rises, causing the liquid to rise. The gauge is calibrated to reflect the actual fuel volume, providing an estimate of the remaining fuel in the tank.

Modern vehicles often use electronic fuel gauges, which provide more accurate readings and can be integrated with other vehicle systems for improved fuel management. These electronic gauges use sensors to monitor the fuel level and transmit data to the vehicle's computer, which then displays the information on the dashboard.

Proper maintenance of the fuel gauge is essential for accurate readings. Regular checks should be performed to ensure that the gauge is functioning correctly and that the fuel level is being accurately reflected. If the fuel gauge is not functioning properly, it may indicate a problem with the fuel system, such as a leak or a malfunctioning sensor.
