It emphasizes tailoring data collection, analysis, risk characterization, and remediation to the distinct chemical properties, toxicology, exposure pathways, and regulatory standards of that pollutant.

Applications include monitoring programs designed around a specific contaminant, development of pollutant-specific analytical methods, and regulatory frameworks that set pollutant-specific cleanup levels, water-quality criteria, and exposure limits. In risk assessment, pollutant-specific models estimate dose and risk by accounting for pollutant-specific kinetics and bioaccumulation. In remediation, pollutant-specific planning selects treatment technologies suited to the pollutant’s solubility, mobility, and degradability.

Measurement and methods commonly involve analytical techniques matched to the pollutant. For metals, methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) are used; for organic contaminants, gas or liquid chromatography paired with mass spectrometry (GC-MS or LC-MS) is typical. In addition, pollutant-specific sensors and biomarkers can provide targeted exposure data.

Advantages of a pollutant-specific focus include higher sensitivity for a given contaminant, more efficient use of resources when addressing a discrete problem, and clearer regulatory compliance. Limitations include potential resource intensiveness when many pollutants must be tracked, and the challenge of accounting for interactions and cumulative effects in multi-pollutant environments.

Examples include lead in drinking water, PFAS in soil and groundwater, benzene in groundwater, and mercury in aquatic systems. Pollutantspecific approaches are often used alongside broader, multi-pollutant assessments to provide comprehensive environmental management.
