Polerskivor

Polerskivor, or polishing discs, are circular abrasive tools used to create smooth or mirror finishes on metals, plastics, wood, and composites. They consist of abrasive grains bonded to a backing and mounted on a spindle, typically on a polisher, grinder, or similar machine.

Construction and materials: Common abrasives include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, ceramic, and diamond-coated grains, chosen for material type and desired finish. Backings range from soft foams and rubbers to firm papers or films, providing flexibility and heat management. Discs vary in diameter, thickness, and grit; finer grits yield smoother finishes, while coarser grits remove more material. Some discs are pre-impregnated with polishing compounds or wax; others are designed to be used with separate compounds and liquids.

Types and use: Poler discs come in foam-backed conditioning discs, non-woven nylon or felt discs, and bonded abrasive discs for heavier material removal. They are widely used in automotive detailing for paint correction, in metal finishing for deburring and brightening, in woodworking for finishing veneers or hardwoods, and in jewelry fabrication for micro-polishing.

Technique and safety: Use light to moderate pressure and keep the tool moving to avoid heat buildup and swirl marks. Work from coarse to fine grits and finish with a suitable polish. Always wear eye protection and a mask if dust is present; ensure the disc is rated for the tool’s speed and correctly mounted.
