Polarkernen is a fictional polar region used in Nordic-inspired literature, worldbuilding, and media. The name combines Scandinavian roots and is usually translated as the polar cores or pole centers. It is not an officially recognized geographic area.

Geography and structure: In many depictions, Polarkernen covers the central polar zones of both hemispheres, extending from coastal ice shelves to interior ice sheets. The landscape includes expansive sea ice, glaciers, nunataks, and archipelago-like coastlines. Designers of the setting often divide it into the Northern Polarkernen and the Southern Polarkernen, with boundaries defined by climate patterns, cultural zones, or narrative conventions rather than precise latitude.

Climate and ecology: The climate is characterized by extreme cold, long winters, brief summers, and strong winds. Polar night and midnight sun are common. Ice, snow, and permafrost dominate the terrain, with sea-ice dynamics driving regional weather.
