Polaritetsmerker

Polaritetsmerker are markings that indicate the polarity of a component or connection in electrical and electronic systems. They help ensure correct orientation and operation, which is crucial for parts that are polarity sensitive, such as capacitors, diodes, LEDs, batteries and power connectors. Polarity indicators also appear on printed circuit boards, enclosures, and cable assemblies to prevent misconnection.

Common markers include stripes, bands, plus and minus signs, or embossed features. On electrolytic capacitors, a stripe along the body marks the negative terminal. Diodes typically use a band to denote the cathode (negative) end. LEDs often rely on the longer lead as the anode (positive), while many package markings and markings on the housing indicate the correct orientation. Batteries and power jacks usually show plus and minus signs or color coding to identify the positive and negative terminals. PCBs may use silkscreen symbols, such as a plus sign on the positive pad and a minus sign or shaded area on the negative pad.

Polarity markers serve to prevent damage and safety risks: reversed polarity can cause overheating, leakage or explosion in electrolytic capacitors, or failure in diodes and other components. Proper labeling supports safe assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Reading component datasheets and following local standards (for example, device markings and PCB conventions) helps ensure consistent interpretation of polarities across designs and industries. Visual inspection and, if needed, electrical testing with a multimeter can verify correct polarity before powering a circuit.
