Pokhara

Pokhara is a city in central Nepal and the capital of Gandaki Province. It is the second-largest city in the country by population and a major gateway to the Annapurna mountain range. Situated on the shore of Phewa Lake in the Pokhara Valley, the city is renowned for its scenic setting with views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.

Geography and climate: Pokhara sits at roughly 800 meters above sea level in a valley framed by hills and high peaks. The climate is influenced by the monsoon, with a warm, wet season from June to September and cooler, dry periods in winter. The lake and surrounding mountains contribute to a mild, varied climate that supports year-round tourism.

Economy and tourism: The economy is dominated by tourism, hospitality, and related services. Trekking operators, hotels, restaurants, and shops form the core of the urban economy. The city also serves as a commercial hub for western Nepal and a base for trekking expeditions into the Annapurna region.

Transportation: Pokhara is connected to Kathmandu by the Prithvi Highway, a major road corridor. The city is served by Pokhara Airport, which handles domestic flights and, since the 2020s, increasing international services. There is currently no railway link to Pokhara.

Culture and people: The city hosts a mix of ethnic groups, including Gurung, Magar, Brahmin, Chhetri, and Newar communities. Nepali is the lingua franca, with local languages and cultures reflected in festivals, temples, and cuisine.

Notable attractions: Key sites include Phewa Lake, Tal Barahi Temple on an island in the lake, Devi’s Falls (Davis Falls), Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, and the World Peace Pagoda. Nearby Sarangkot offers sunrise and mountain views, while Begnas and Rupa Lakes provide additional recreation.
