These areas typically feature flat-topped uplands, steep escarpments, and deep valleys. Elevations commonly range from about 600 to 2,000 meters, though local variation occurs. The term emphasizes landforms rather than political boundaries and is applied across multiple continents and climates.

Geography and topography

Plateauregions consist of extensive summits with varying degrees of relief, often bordered by escarpments and dissected by canyons and valleys. Soils are usually shallow and well-drained. Climate and moisture vary with altitude and latitude, producing gradients from grass-dominated plateaus to more arid or forested rims. Hydrology includes perennial streams that cut through the terrain and recharge groundwater.
